Finding My Ikigai
Aug 09, 2023āHi, friends. When I was recovering from my surgery, I spent a lot of time reading. And my favorite book during that time was Ikigai. And what Ikigai is, it's the Japanese secret to a long and happy life. And what they believe is a long and happy life, how to live a long and happy life. There's a couple things involved.
They have great diets, they exercise, but then they also do they do what they love what the world needs, what they're very good at. And then can they make a living of it? And that's what Ikigai means. They choose a life that they love and they live it all the way to the very end. Where in America, we'll get a job, work 40 years there and then retire and then enjoy our life after retirement.
We're in this village in Okinawa where there's All these folks that are living longer than 100 years old, there's karate instructors that are over 100 years old, teachers over 100 years old, artists over 100 years old, and they've taken this icky guy. And incorporate it into their life. Like I said it's what they're very good at doing, what they love to do, what the world needs, and can they make a career out of it?
And there's there are 10 rules of Ikigai. I'm not going to bring them all up, but a couple of them really hit home with me expressing gratitude, exercising daily, really living in the moment these are all things that I really like, but what I'm really passionate about is being the chief operating officer at Gulfstream.
Goodwill. I am passionate about serving the people that are in our organization, our associates our managers, our directors, and then also people in the community that are part of our mission. And I think I'm going to focus a lot of my energies on my Ikigai and help our people get from where they are, to where they want to be.
I really enjoy helping new managers become Wildly successful coaches. Most organizations managers don't get any type of leadership training for 10 years after they get promoted, which is just crazy. I want to support our new managers and Teach them how to become wildly successful coaches and really not teach them help guide them.
I've got 35 years of leadership experience. I've had some wild successes and some horrible failures. So I can guide them to. Get from where they are to where they want to be. So we really want to focus on living my Ikigai and and giving back to the people at Gulfstream Goodwill and then people within our mission that we serve.
I hope that means something to you and I want you to go out, coach them up and make it a great day.
